چکیده
Increasing numbers of cases of Vero cytotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) O157 infection, well published incidents, and new scientific evidence make it appropriate to produce new guidelines for their control. This document reviews the clinical and epidemiological features of VTEC O157 infection, describes the principles of microbiological investigation and laboratory safety, and presents recommendations for the prevention of spread of VTEC) O157. The recommendations consider direct spread of infection from animals, foodborne spread, the institutions in which spread is more likely to occur (nursing homes, schools, and children's day nurseries), and groups at particular risk of acquiring and transmitting infection (in essence, food handlers, and those unable to maintain high standards of hygiene for themselves and their carers).

Verocytotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection in dairy farm families.
Fecal samples from 335 dairy farm residents and 1458 cattle on 80 farms were tested for Vero cytotoxin (VT)-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC). Residents were also tested for antibodies to VT1 and O157 lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Residents and cattle on farms with VTEC-positive persons or E. coli O157:H7-positive cattle were retested. Twenty-one persons (6.3%) on 16 farms (20.8%) and 46% of cattle...
متن کاملThe surveillance of vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 in Wales, 1990 to 1998.
Population-based surveillance for Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) O157 has been carried out in Wales since 1990. The annual incidence has remained stable during the 9-year period (mean: 1.6 cases per 100,000 population); the rate is highest in children younger than 5 years of age. Blood in the stool is reported in fewer than half the cases, indicating the importance of screenin...
متن کاملAntibodies to Escherichia coli O157 in patients with haemorrhagic colitis and haemolytic uraemic syndrome.
Twenty four sera from patients with haemolytic uraemic syndrome or haemorrhagic colitis and healthy controls were examined for antibodies to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Escherichia coli O157. Faecal specimens from these patients were also examined for Vero cytotoxin producing E coli (VTEC) by DNA probes, and for faecal Vero cytotoxin. Eight patients with faecal E coli O157:H7 gave a strong ...
متن کاملVero Cytotoxin–Producing Escherichia coli O157 Gastroenteritis in Farm Visitors, North Wales
An outbreak of Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 (VTEC O157) gastroenteritis in visitors to an open farm in North Wales resulted in 17 primary and 7 secondary cases of illness. E. coli O157 Vero cytotoxin type 2, phage type 2 was isolated from 23 human cases and environmental animal fecal samples. A case-control study of 16 primary case-patients and 36 controls (all children) showe...
متن کاملContact with farming environment as a major risk factor for Shiga toxin (Vero cytotoxin)-producing Escherichia coli O157 infection in humans.
In a prospective, unmatched case-control study of sporadic Shiga toxin (Vero cytotoxin)-producing Escherichia coli O157 (STEC O157) infection in England, exposure to the farming environment emerged strongly as a risk factor (adjusted odds ratio = 2.45; 95% confidence intervals = 1.49-4.02; p=0.0004) posing further challenges and opportunities for prevention.
